Peru & the Galapagos Islands

Day 1 - Home to Lima, Peru
Fly to Lima today where you will be greeted with a “Bienvenidos a Lima” and transferred to your hotel for a restful evening.

Day 2 - Lima
After breakfast, enjoy a private guided tour of colonial Lima, known as the city of the kings, with it’s cathedral, the main square, with it’s original bronze fountain built in 1650, and the San Francisco Convent and its catacombs. Visit the residential areas of San Isidro and Miraflores, stopping at Larco Mar to enjoy a view of the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Return to your hotel in Lima. Sightseeing highlights include a visit to a ranch for an impressive performance by Peruvian prancing horses. Enjoy welcome cocktails and dinner at Casa Aliaga, a 66-room home built in 1535 that has remained in the same family for generations.

Day 3 - Lima to Cuzco
This morning we catch a flight to Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. This afternoon we depart on a guided tour of Cuzco, and learn about the Inca way of life and the evolution of the cultural scene after the arrival of the Spaniards.  Sights include the ruins that surround the city including the imposing fortress of Sacsayhuaman, the baths of Tambomachay and the ritual sites of Kenko and Puca Pucara, the cathedral, Santo Domingo Monastery and other ornate buildings constructed in the most genuine Baroque and Renaissance style.  The rest of the day is free to continue exploring the town at your own pace, peruse the local handicraft shops in the San Blas District, or rub elbows with the locals around a pisco sour. Your home for the next two nights is the fabulous Hotel Libertador nestled in the historical centre of Cuzco, occupying the fabulous Casa de los Cuatro Bustos and just opposite the Koricancha temple.

Day 4 - Cuzco
Full-day excursion to the beautiful Urubamba, the Sacred Valley of the Inca situated between Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Visit the ancient Inca village of Pisac, founded during colonial times. A special homemade lunch is arranged at a local farmhouse in the valley before we visit mysterious and magical Ollantaytambo, with it’s legends of converging energies floating in the air.  Explore the ruins towering high above. Returning to Cuzco we’ll stop at the traditional market of Chinchero. Dinner this evening includes traditional Andean folkloric music and dance.

Day 5 - Cuzco to Machu Picchu
Board a train as it rails through spectacular landscapes to the Lost City of the Incas. Ascend upon mountains cradling the Urubamba River, until reaching a small village nestled along a narrow valley flanked by precipitous peaks, in a landscape of impossible beauty. Machu Picchu, the last refuge of the Inca Virgins of the Sun sits on the saddle of a mountain overlooking the deep canyon.  Take time to explore Machu Picchu truly a highlight of the trip.  Visit the village of Aguas Calientes before returning to the hotel for a delicious dinner.

Day 6 - Machu Picchu to Cuzco
This morning experience the breathtaking sunrise over the spiritual sanctuary of Machu Picchu, a highlight of any Peru tour.  The morning mist adds to the mystery of the site¹s origins and why it was abandoned.  Maybe explore Huaynu Picchu or a visit to the Temple of the Moon and the fabulous Inca Bridge or relaxing in the thermal baths in Aguas Calientes. After lunch at a local restaurant, we enjoy a scenic train journey as we make our way back to Cuzco. This evening you are guests at a 300 year old restored monastery for an elegant dinner.  An experience you will long remember.

Day 7 - Cuzco to Puno, Lake Titicaca
Motor through the Sacred Valley and over the Andes to the charming city of Puno, skirting the shores of Lake Titicaca.  Ancient Incan legend states this area is the birthplace of the Inca Empire and that life began here. Your hotel is the beautiful 5 star Libertador hotel. This evening you are free to relax and enjoy the spectacular views of the lake and surrounding area.

Day 8 - Puno, Lake Titicaca
Today is rare opportunity to join in an off the beaten path experience.  R & J has arranged for you to cruise Lake Titicaca to the loating islands of Uros. Made entirely of reeds and inhabited by the Aymara Uros people, they live in huts built on platforms of reeds,
not more than 30-40 cms/1foot thick. Short hike on the islands, then the boat trip continues as far as the island of Taquile. Members of this self supporting Aymara community welcome you in their colourful national costume and show us around the island. Lunch is served while admiring spectacular views of the haunting beauty of Lake Titicaca.  Return to your hotel for a restful evening here in Puto.

Day 9 - Puno to Home
Today we fly from Puno to Lima and connect with our flight for the United States.  Those who choose to continue to Eduador and the Galapogos Island will fly to Quito, Ecuador.  (see Post Optional Tour Day 9.)

Day 9 - Lima to Quito, Ecuador
Fly to Quito, Ecuador today and tour colonial Quito, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Visit Old Town, including the Plaza de la Independencia. It is the home of the tomb of Sucre and also houses interesting 17th and 18th century paintings.  The Plaza de San Francisco was constructed by the Spanish in 1553, and the church has a high altar made of pure gold and beautifully carved ceilings. Next visit La Compañia, the finest of all Jesuit churches with it’s richly sculptured facade and interior. Later visit the Indian market at Avenida de 24 de Mayo at the base of El Panecillo and the Ipiales market.  Lunch is arranged at La Querencia famous for its superb Ecuadorian dishes and excellent views of Quito.  Stay at your beautiful hotel offering outstanding service and atmosphere.

Day 10 - Quito
Experience the Awakening Valley today with a visit to Calderon, famous for with its bread-dough figurines, and Cayambe, where we savor local delicacies. Continue through beautiful Andean landscapes to the famous Otavalo Indian Market in time to start our hunt for hand-knitted wool sweaters, colorful tapestries, straw hats, and more. Next visit Cotacachi, a quiet country town surrounded by majestic mountains, an excellent place to shop for hand-leather clothes and accessories. Lunch is served at the historic and charming Hacienda Pinsaqui before continuing to the middle of the world.  See the spot that marks the exact middle of the world and stand with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and one foot in the Southern Hemisphere.

Day 11-14 - Quito to Galapagos Islands
Fly to the Galapagos Islands and board the M/V Galapagos Legend.  Experience the Galapagos Islands and their unique flora and fauna.  Daily visits always involve a leisurely walk in a small group led by your own naturalist guide, allowing you to experience close encounters with nature.  You’ll visit the Charles Darwin Research Station.  As you visit the islands of Santa Cruz, Dragon Hill, Venice, Espanola, North Seymour, you’ll have opportunity to see flamingos, sea lions, Galapagos Tortoise, land Iguanas, colorful sally light foot crabs, albatross, and the famous blue footed boobies, all living in their natural habitat.  On day 14 after a full day of cruising among the islands, fly to Quito for a restful night at your lovely hotel and a farewell dinner celebration at a delightful local dining establishment.

Day 15 - Quito
